Where did I go, you ask??

I'm still around.. and making cakes.  You will notice I haven't posted anything lately, that's because I'm SO DARN BUSY!!!!

I'm working part time at Whimsical Cake Studio, I used to work there before I went back to my insurance career (sounds dryer than it is haha), but I needed a part time job to save up some extra $$, pay the bills off... maybe get to go on a trip one of these days... etc!  And conveniently, they needed a cake decorator!

I love working there and I still make LOTS of cakes now :) But I'll probably only ever post stuff I make in my "spare time" (what's that?).

But.. since I'm in a slightly gloating mood.. to ease your troubled minds while you wait for my latest masterpiece, behold the Peoples Choice winner at Books2Eat, an event supporting Edmonton Public Libraries.  You can see it/read about it at http://whimsicalcakestudio.blogspot.com/2010/05/bon-apetite.html, I helped :)

"Well, Gran, you might have noticed that my boyfriend glitters. It’s just something he does in the sun. Don’t worry about it…"

And... finally catching up on my blog this morning, please see my favorite cake that I have made lately. Here's Trish's birthday cake!

Trish asked me to surprise her, so she gave me a list of things she likes... vampires, Batman, video games, makeup, hockey, and it was a toga party to boot.
In the end, I ran with the vampires, Batman & makeup, I just couldn't fit them all in! :)
The cake was red velvet, it just seemed appropriate for a vampire book.

If you haven't read the Twilight Series, you're missing out!  The Twilight Saga Collection

You can't get lost with this cake...

Lindsay & Leif's friends moved away to Fort McMurray recently... so they asked for directions, in the form of a cake. This way, not only will they not get lost...
but they won't get hungry either :)
That's not really how it went... but it sounds pretty good!
There was a message written in that big white gaping area... I left it open for them to be creative with a food-safe marker.

I love these food writer markers, I drew the map details on with them - Gourmet Writer Food Decorator Pens, Assorted Colors, Set of 10

No no no.. I didn't say it was stupid, I said it was a dummy!

I decorated this dummy cake this evening for Trish, for her trade show.

A dummy cake is not real cake, it's styrofoam on the inside, but all the decorating is the real deal.

Is that smooth fondant or what?

And I shall call this one.... Spike!

Here's a gluten free hedgehog made this week, this may be the CUTEST cake I ever made! The bottom is not gluten free, it was a carrot cake which I very much wanted to break off a piece and eat, but I suppose they might not have appreciated that haha.

It was a very busy week of cakes! Another Thomas which hopefully I can get a picture of, the carpenter cake, our little buddy the hedgehog here.. and more to come this month, including another go at the Littlest Pet Shop. Thanks everyone for supporting my favorite hobby :) Keep those requests coming!

#1 Journeyman!

Breann had a par-tay for her man Dustin since he was away for months for school, getting a red seal in carpentry. So, in honor of his coming home and his accomplishment, she requested a carpenter cake :) Here's some Carhartt overalls, a toolbelt and some tools.

Congrats Dustin!

Hello Hailey! Er... I mean Kitty!

For Hailey's 22nd Birthday, her friends Tanya and Christine made a request for a Hello Kitty birthday cake. In fact, the whole party was Hello Kitty themed!!

Here's the cake that I whipped up that happened to match the plates, and the bow matched Hailey's hair!

The cake that Mike made...

So, Mike wanted a Roberto Luongo helmet for his birthday.... it sounded like a challenge, but I was up for it. I started by baking the cake, and stacking them and doing a "rough draft" of the carving... so to speak.
I went to the store... came home... and Mike had taken matters into his own hands! He said that my helmet looked more like this -

He wouldn't stand for anything less than an exact replica of his hockey hero's helmet. See below the results of his hard work.

Pretty impressive! He has nearly out mastered the teacher. He has been promoted from detailing lackey to co-cakemaker. :)
